In 2022, Disney updated its auditing standards for authorized manufacturers. In addition to the **Disney Social Compliance Audit** or **Disney ILS audit**, Disney’s audit checklist now includes the HS (Health and Safety) and Higg FEM (Facility Environmental Module) requirements. Only by successfully passing the **Disney factory audit** and verifying the Higg FEM self-assessment can a factory receive the updated **Disney FAMA certificate**.
### HS Health and Safety Standards
The updated HS Health and Safety Standards came into effect on March 1, 2023. Disney categorizes health and safety issues into three levels:
– **Red – Minimum Compliance Standard (RED-MCS)**: Non-compliance with any RED-MCS issue will immediately fail the audit.
– **Orange – Serious (ORANGE-Serious)**: Accumulating three or more Orange issues escalates to RED, resulting in a failed audit.
– **Yellow – Non-Minimum Compliance Standard (Yellow-NON-MCS)**: Non-compliance here does not affect overall audit approval.
The updated HS standard offers more transparency, with health and safety issues clearly ranked by severity. However, it has also become more challenging, as even minor issues could result in non-compliance if they accumulate.
### Higg FEM Requirements
Disney requires suppliers to complete the Higg FEM self-assessment module by April 30, 2023, and the validation module by December 31, 2023. The **Higg Index**, developed by the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC), is a standardized self-assessment tool that helps brands, suppliers, and manufacturers evaluate the environmental impact of consumer goods production. The **Higg FEM** (Facility Environmental Module) is specifically for manufacturers and focuses on sustainability in environmental practices.
The Higg FEM consists of seven parts:
1. Environmental Management Systems
2. Energy Use/Greenhouse Gas Emissions
3. Water Usage
4. Wastewater
5. Emissions
6. Waste Management
7. Chemical Management
Each of these parts has a three-level structure (Levels 1, 2, and 3), representing increasingly advanced environmental practices. Factories must meet all Level 1 criteria before advancing to Levels 2 or 3.
